Fluorescent Magnetic Beads (FMAG)

Separation and detection in one particle

Order

Xen Fluorescent Magnetic Beads uniquely combine magnetic separation and fluorescence detection in a single particle. Powered by quantum dot technology, they enable high-sensitivity, low-background, multiplexed detection workflows for next-generation diagnostics and research.

Because enrichment and readout happen on the same bead, a separate labelling step disappears from the workflow. The quantum dot core gives a narrow emission bandwidth for cleaner signals, high brightness for improved sensitivity, and a large separation between excitation and emission that reduces background noise. Fast magnetic response keeps wash and separation steps efficient, and every lot ships with certified fluorescence spectra and magnetic performance.

Five emission wavelengths are available, from 450 nm through to 665 nm. Xen is the only supplier offering built-in fluorescent magnetic beads across multiple emission wavelengths with customisation options.

Typical applications
  • Multiplex immunoassays
  • Fluorescence-based diagnostics and IVD
  • High-throughput screening
  • Advanced molecular diagnostics
  • Research platforms using multi-colour detection

Non-Quenched Fluorescent Beads (NQFB)

Fluorescence that does not fade

Order

Xen Non-Quenched Fluorescent Beads are engineered for maximum assay sensitivity and stability. By integrating protective quantum dots into the core, these beads eliminate the photobleaching and excitation limits of standard dyes, giving a brighter and longer-lasting signal.

Unlike traditional fluorescent dyes that rapidly fade or quench under continuous light exposure, the inorganic quantum dot core guarantees zero photobleaching. Signal intensity stays reliable and ultra-stable during prolonged imaging, repeated measurements, and high-intensity laser excitation. Emission peaks are exceptionally sharp and well defined, which eliminates cross-channel optical bleed, and the very large separation between excitation and emission dramatically reduces autofluorescence and background noise.

All five colour wavelengths, from 450 nm to 665 nm, can be excited simultaneously from a single UV-to-blue light source in the 365 to 380 nm band. This removes the need for expensive, complex multi-laser setups in multiplexed assays. These beads are non-magnetic; if magnetic enrichment is also needed, see Fluorescent Magnetic Beads.

Typical applications
  • High-sensitivity multiplex immunoassays requiring quantitative, multi-target detection from a single sample volume
  • Flow cytometry calibration and standards, where stable optical properties make these an ideal reference
  • Lateral flow and point-of-care diagnostics, where brightness and zero photobleaching give reliable quantification at low target concentrations
  • Microfluidics and cellular imaging, enabling long-term tracking without signal degradation

TRF: Time-Resolved Fluorescent Beads

Read after the background decays

Order

Xen Time-Resolved Fluorescence particles are engineered for maximum sensitivity and superior signal clarity in immunoassays and diagnostic platforms. By using long-lifetime lanthanide fluorescence, they allow signal to be collected after background fluorescence has decayed, which dramatically improves the assay signal-to-noise ratio. Time-resolved fluorescence is widely regarded as one of the most sensitive fluorescence detection technologies for biomedical and diagnostic applications.

Two lanthanide channels are offered. Europium gives a sharp, well-defined red emission at 610 nm with a Stokes shift greater than 200 nm and a millisecond fluorescence lifetime, and is the gold standard for time-resolved immunoassays and diagnostic detection systems. Terbium gives a bright green emission at 545 nm with a long fluorescence lifetime and high resistance to photobleaching, providing a distinct second channel for multiplexing where spectral discrimination is critical.

The lanthanide chelates are encapsulated internally throughout the particle, so there is no dye leaching in aqueous systems, and high dye loading gives strong signal output with excellent storage stability. Particle size stays consistent before and after dye loading, with excellent monodispersity and stable dispersion that resists aggregation.

Typical applications
  • Time-resolved immunoassays
  • IVD and clinical diagnostics
  • High-sensitivity biomarker detection
  • Multiplex assay development
  • OEM assay kit manufacturing

C&C: Controls & Calibrators

Calibrate what you measure

Order

Controls and Calibrators is a set of recombinant antigens and one monoclonal antibody used to calibrate and standardise assays. Each item serves as a calibrator or standard in immunoassays and as an immunogen for antisera production.

Three cardiac items are available: the recombinant human cardiac Troponin I and C complex, recombinant human NT-proBNP, and NT-proBNP fused to a human IgG1 Fc domain, which produces a disulfide-linked homodimeric antigen format. Haematology is covered by recombinant human fetal haemoglobin, supplied as a tetramer of two beta and two gamma chains, and by monoclonal antibody 30D12, which recognises glycophorin A on human red blood cells and mediates erythrocyte agglutination. Infectious disease is covered by the SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid protein N-terminal domain.

Expression system matters when choosing. Material from HEK293 carries heterogeneous mammalian-type glycosylation, which gives a biologically relevant antigen but can affect recognition by antibodies raised against certain C-terminal epitopes. Material from E. coli carries no glycosylation. Purity is greater than 95% by SDS-PAGE for every item except fetal haemoglobin, which is greater than 90%.

Typical applications
  • Calibrator or standard in immunoassays
  • Immunogen for antisera production
  • Assay standardisation and lot-to-lot control

How every catalogue number is built

Three attributes describe every bead

A note on how the four bead lines are specified. Every catalogue number is defined by at most three choices, and nothing else is selectable. Concentration, magnetic behaviour, and excitation range all follow from the line you pick or from the emission you choose, so they appear on each product page as stated specifications rather than as questions.

01
Particle Size
Speed vs surface area

Decides how fast the beads pellet and how much surface area is available for your ligand. Larger beads separate faster; smaller beads bind more per milligram. Magnetic Beads offer five values from 100 nm to 1.5 micrometres. The three fluorescent lines are stocked at 200 nm, and any size from 100 to 500 nm can be built to order.

MAG  100 nm – 1.5 µm / 5 values
FMAG · NQFB · TRF  200 nm stocked
Built to order  100 – 500 nm

02
Surface Type
Your conjugation workflow

Decides how your molecule attaches to the bead, and therefore your conjugation workflow. Carboxyl supports covalent EDC/NHS coupling of proteins, antibodies, and amine-modified oligonucleotides. Streptavidin captures biotinylated targets immediately, with no conjugation chemistry and minimal non-specific background. Both are offered on all four bead lines.

Carboxyl  covalent EDC/NHS
Streptavidin  biotin capture, no chemistry
Availability  both, on all four lines

03
Emission Wavelength
Which channel it reports on

Decides which detection channel the bead reports on. Fluorescent Magnetic Beads and Non-Quenched Fluorescent Beads each offer five channels from 450 to 665 nm, all excited by one 365 to 380 nm source. Time-Resolved Fluorescent Beads offer two, and there the emission also selects the lanthanide and its excitation range. Magnetic Beads carry no fluorophore, so the attribute does not apply.

FMAG · NQFB  450 – 665 nm / 5 channels
TRF  545 nm Tb · 610 nm Eu
Excitation  one 365 – 380 nm source
MAG  not applicable

EXCEPTION · C&C
Controls & Calibrators uses none of the three. It is a fixed list of six items, selected by analyte.
